Some say it's all in the name, but 1-800-FLOWERS.COM does more than just peddle petunias online. The Internet flower company sells fresh flowers and plants from its toll-free number, Web sites, and more than 30 million catalogs. Through its subsidiaries, 1-800-FLOWERS.com offers gift baskets, gourmet foods, chocolates and candies, cookies, popcorn, and wine. The company also partners with such search giants as Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo! to sell its products. Founder and CEO James F. McCann, a former social worker, got into the flower business in 1976. To focus on its core floral and food units, the company exited from the home decor and children's gift business in 2009.
